It seems to me that generally O2 3g coverage in South West London is pretty poor. I would generally expect to get pretty good signals throughout most of the M25 area but it seems this isn’t the case.

Richmond is a typical example. Even on the main High Street you can struggle to get a normal GSM signal let alone 3g. Once you cross the river into Twickenham it’s ok until you get near the station.

Surely on the train signals should be reasonable? Apparently not. No signal from Richmond to Twickenham, little signal then most of the way to Feltham. Even into London it is poor, nothing at all through Mortlake and Barnes even at Putney it was a struggle.

Seems to settle down once you get to Clapham Junction, but then so it should. I never had these problems on Orange that I remember but the again I never wanted a 3g signal so much then.

Apparently 3 Holiday Inns in the UK are offering a ‘human bed warming service’ this month. A ‘willing’ staff member will dress in an all in one sleeper suit which covers their hair as well apparently, and will lay in the bed for you, heating to the required temperature which is apparently 20 degrees.

The member of staff will reportedly leave BEFORE the room occupier enters the bed, which I guess is a relief for any partner of the said occupier.

I’m not sure it’s a service I’d want.

Londoners are often criticised for not talking to their neighbours and for the silent commute where no eye contact is made and no conversation is heard, possibly except for the two women talking about the unacceptable boyfriend their friend has and how crazy she is to move in with him because he will always be a cheat and won’t change but they don’t know how to tell her or even if they should especially as she works with him.

However back to my point, as someone who finds it reasonably easy to chat to strangers, I too have largely given up trying to chat in London. There are twomain reasons for this, both I suspect connected.

Casual remarks and simple comments, like “have you been waiting long for the bus” are more often than not met with a strange stare and the silent reply of someone who either doesn’t speak even conversational English or who wants to pretend not to.

Also it seems this extends to what should be simple good manners, and so “Please”, “Thank you” and “Excuse me” are also forgotten and I can’t abide that.

So whilst I largely welcome the large numbers of different cultures and the diversity of languages, please please why can’t you all learn a little more English so tha you can at least not seem so rude and so not part of our culture, because by living here you should become part of our culture, surely?

Sadly today I have to travel into London again for a training course. Not that I don’t want to do the training I just have no wish to endure the travel and the conditions people are made to endure. I have started writing this in the queue waiting to get onto the Waterloo and City line which looks to have a hundred or so people ahead of me.

I couldn’t get in the first train at Feltham which was running 10 minutes late and was only made up of 4 carriages and so was jammed packed before it arrived and more-so when it left. I got on the third train, the second being an empty but slow one and even managed to wedge myself into a seat.

Now still queuing with hundreds of other people I wait to no doubt jam myself into a tube train. People wait in small, well trained clumps near the unmarked positions of the doors hoping for their chance to pile into the next train.

The announcement explains that due to a broken down train at Bank there are delays on the Waterloo and City line today. Lucky me.

At the start of the year I decided to swap from the bus and train to just the bus in an effort to save some money and to see if my journey would be any easier.

Whilst the bus from Hampton (R70) to Richmond has seemed to be fairly consistent, it’s just too slow, taking anything up to an hour and fifteen minutes to cover the 6-8 miles.

Coming home though is far worse. The bus from Richmond (490) to Feltham seems the most unreliable of all, tonight for example I waited over 30 mons for one to arrive. It then never takes less than 45 minutes to get to Feltham but for some reason attracts some on the least customer friendly and aggressive drivers. I guess it could be the buses at fault but you can feel the driver pushing the bus to accellerate and brake far too hard. Probably because they are always late.

Maybe in Central London things are better but out here in West London I will be back on the train this week.

Sorry Boris it still needs a lot of work to make it a viable option!
