It simply wouldn’t be right if AppSumo didn’t get a mention on the site, right from the start. Although I’ve only been a member for the last couple of years, it’s made a huge difference to the things I have been able to do, and the money I’ve saved in doing so.

What is AppSumo?

The easiest way I can explain it is a site that negotiates deals with new (mainly) web software developers who are bringing out a new product, or want more users for an existing product. AppSumo then offers these deals to its users and the discounts are generally pretty impressive. You might for example pay £49 for a “lifetime” license for a product that might normally charge its users £49 for a year, or maybe a month for the same access.

What’s the Catch?

There really isn’t one generally. Your one-off fee might only get you a few licenses, or be limited in other ways, but generally no more limited than anyone else buying the lowest tier access to the product. Often you can buy multiple licenses if you wish, which will raise the levels of these restrictions, again normally to similar levels of other plans available. However you have to bear in mind, that for larger organisations, these types of deal will rarely be all they need and if the product is of use, its like more will need to be paid at some point. But you can argue that at that point, the product would have proved worth its value.

Why Do I Buy Them?

Simply put I enjoy exploring new products, and this is a great way to do it, because the purchases come with a 60 day no quibble guarantee of a refund so there is little or no risk, and you get to test the product and decide if it has a use and a value for yourself. I’ve kept several packages that I saw had potential, and then not used them for over a year, because I didn’t have a need, however I recognised that I might in the future. That investment approach has lead to me saving hundreds of pounds on a few of the deals, even if I’ve purchased a few that I never really use at all.

There’s really nothing to lose in joining AppSumo, it’s free, you don’t have to buy any of the deals, but there’s just a chance you might get an absolute bargain.
